 | IMPROVED/UPGRADED REBUILT VP44 INJECTION PUMP FROM BLUE CHIP DIESEL
What our upgraded rebuilt pump is….
Since 2002, we have developed, and are constantly looking for the most cost effective way to deal with the problem fuel systems on 1998 ½-2002 Dodge trucks with the VP44 injection pump. These pumps are on Ford and Freightliner trucks too if they have a Cummins ISB engine. We have made for us a superior VP44 injection pump that admittedly costs more up front but works much better and lasts much longer, thereby drastically lowering vehicle cost per year or per mile. This was the result of a lot of research and keeping our ear to the ground in this industry. The result is we offer the best upgraded pump available. All of our rebuilt pumps come with NEW or upgraded remanufactured parts everywhere we are aware of a weak spot or problem. We replace every pump housing with the latest Bosch part number, which includes a steel bushing in the housing and always install a NEW, upgraded computer. These are the components that have been the cause of the most problems. We do EVERY upgrade there is for the VP44 pump that is available through Bosch, not just the ones necessary to get the rebuilt unit to run again, and we do ALL of them on EVERY pump we sell. This assures you of the best value and dependability available anywhere.
What the common VP44 problems are….
The housings on the VP44 wear out due to low fuel pressure from weak lift pumps causing damage to the diaphragm in the front of the VP44 pump. This failure causes the steel timing piston to vibrate in the aluminum bore of the main pump housing and the result in a short time is the housing wears to the point that fuel bypasses the piston and full advance cannot be accomplished which causes the code 216. This explains why, as 24 valve trucks get older, the fuel mileage goes down steadily, and when we replace the injection pump with one that has a new housing we get the mileage back! In a typical competitor's rebuild, if the case isn't worn out completely then it passes the test and a partly worn out case gets to the customer, just to fail sooner. It should also be pointed out that the replacement housings we use, have a STEEL insert for the timing piston, which the original housings did not have. The code 216 only tells you that the housing is worn out, but please understand, this failure does NOT cause any driveability issues, other than lost power and fuel mileage. As these symptoms come on slowly the driver isn't aware of the change until they drive one of our replacement units and get back the power and mileage.
The other component that causes almost all of the drivability issues is the computer on the top of the injection pump. The computer gets intermittent because of too many heat cycles. When you shut the truck off the latent heat in the engine heats up the computer and after many heat cycles the solder that holds the electrical components to the circuit board of the computer becomes crystalline and no longer makes a good electrical connection, causing intermittent drivability issues, such as "dead pedal", intermittent hard cold start, intermittent hard hot start and white smoke. These drivability issues usually get so bad that the customer finally takes the truck in for diagnosis, only to find none of these issues create a diagnostic code or a so called DTC. This makes it hard for the inexperienced mechanic to advise the customer honestly or accurately. The computer cannot be replaced with the pump on the truck and the pump needs to be calibrated to the mechanical parts of the pump on the$200,000 test bench at Bosch. This has never been a viable alternative for a rebuilt unit, as there are always other components in need of replacement.
Why we replace every computer on every pump we sell….. Federal Express experienced so many computer failures with the VP44 that they convinced Bosch to make a better computer to deal with these heat and drivability issues. The computer is rarely replaced on lower cost rebuilt units as its cost is almost $600 and at that price our competition can’t afford to put a new one on EVERY pump they sell and then sell the unit at the low prices you see available on line. ALL of our pumps come with the same NEW upgraded computer that FedEx uses. Our competitors don't often replace the computer as it is expensive and if it works on the test stand briefly, and at 70 degrees or so, then it probably will be okay, is their policy! It isn't tested in prolonged heat and or cold in the typical rebuild process so it probably will act differently in real world use of your truck. Imagine buying a competitor’s rebuild and not knowing how many heat cycles the computer has suffered, while on someone else’s truck. You will have no idea how soon the used computer will fail, when you use a competitor’s product. Our pumps come with a NEW computer with NO heat cycles on it! Common sense prevails! How our pumps are doing……..
We have been selling these pumps for over five years and our customers that haul RVs for a living and do crazy mileage per year have not had any injection pump issues to date. Now that we have over 600 pumps in the marketplace and as we have less than a two percent failure rate we feel very confident we are selling a better product and value. Our warranty is unlimited mileage for one year after the installation date. There are three things that WILL VOID every rebuilt Bosch VP44, regardless of where you buy it. This is Bosch Policy. One is contaminated fuel, which is becoming all too prevalent with backyard fuel and WVO. We see lots of rust, oxidation and just plain slime in many pumps we disassemble. The second is if you damage the diaphragm in the front of the injection pump which can ONLY be due to low fuel pressure, and thirdly, if you make a "nick" in the solenoid wire by hooking up a fueling style performance box. We offer a replacement plastic "Pump Cover" to make that electrical connection, which to date has prevented customers from being denied warranty consideration.
Cheap insurance for a newly installed injection pump…..
A very smart thing to do to save money and do the best you can to keep your new injection pump in warranty is to install our "Low Fuel Pressure Warning Kit". The indicator light will tell you when you have low fuel pressure AND when to change your fuel filter. The installation of our kit will save you money because you will be replacing fuel filters by restriction instead of by mileage or when the whim occurs to you. If replacing the fuel filter doesn't raise the pressure to keep the light out, then you most likely need a new lift pump. This will prevent you from ruining the diaphragm in the injection pump and causing the related problems which are not covered by warranty.
We can help YOU do the repairs………
Install the injection pump yourself!
If you diagnose your truck and need an injection pump, or other fuel related products we sell, we'd be pleased to assist you in doing the replacement yourself, or assisting your chosen mechanic in doing same, with complete written directions, or over the phone. We figure about half of our customers do the install themselves. We have awesome install directions, we’re told, that tell you about the few pitfalls that can happen and how to avoid them, as well as how to save about an hour and a half of install time. We choose NOT to share them with everyone by putting them on this website, but will happily email them to you upon receipt of an order. This way if you are intimidated by them you have time to find a repair facility to do the work for you. We also can provide you with the necessary puller to get the gear off the front of the injection pump. You may own it for $50, or rent it for nothing if you buy a pump from us. We will also tell you some tricks, to save a lot of time changing the injection pump. We help lots of folks fix lots of trucks over the phone every day.
